Now that James has proposed, it is really funny when he tells me about the various occasions where he carried the ring with him in case the perfect opportunity presented itself. On New Years Day, two days before the proposal date, we went to the famed Neil Perry restaurant, Rockpool, for a romantic dinner date. James had brought the ring with him as he figured that, on that lovely warm midsummer evening in that stunning restaurant, there would be no better time or place to pop the question.

Of course, we know that it didn't quite turn out that way. Though he had chosen an early dinner booking in the hope that we would have some privacy, we soon had two other couples on either side of our table. He didn't see that as being too much of an obstacle, but then I ended up in a bit of a tizz after accidentally kicking one of the waiters in the back of the leg as I was trying to manoeuvre myself into a more comfortable position at our booth. I became so nervous and worried about whether I had hurt the poor guy and focused on not missing the chance to apologise when he next walked by our table that James figured it might be better to leave it til after dinner as we wandered along the banks of the Yarra River. We had made plans to meet some friends later in the evening but because our dinner ran way over time, there was no way that casual stroll was ever going to eventuate! When I think of all that James was up against in finding the right moment, I really do feel sorry for him.

I know the title of this post is not "James's Proposal Adventures" but I simply had to share this little tidbit of information before I share with you the glorious night we had at Rockpool.

We left my sister's apartment and boarded a tram down to the Casino complex...

Where we enjoyed the sun at the river's edge.

We had time for a little peek inside the hotel at Crown. Check out the flower power in the lobby!

It was then time for us to make our way to our destination. As soon as we walked through the doors, we felt totally removed from the world outside. There is a dark, sexy ambience as you wander through the corridor where wine, oysters and meats are almost artfully displayed...

The world outside well and truly forgotten, we made our way to our table and took a few moments to really soak up the atmosphere. A grand restaurant that wouldn't be out of place in glam New York, Rockpool is the place for that really long lunch or classy dinner. If I had the dosh, I'd book the whole damn place to celebrate the fact I could book the whole damn place!

We started with a couple of cocktails - a Daiquiri(Havana Club Añejo Rum, Lime, Sugar) and a Paloma(Calle 23 Tequila, Pink Grapefruit, Lime, Soda).I can't remember whose was whose as I drank most of both (and may or may not have also ordered a second Paloma).

For entrees, we both had the Four Tastes of the Sea, which had come highly recommended. Melt-in-your-mouth morsels with the most inspired dressings, they didn't disappoint. I urge you, if you are visiting Rockpool soon, to try this one for yourself.

I was clearly in Summer Holiday spirits as I chose another cocktail over wine that night - this one was the Americano (Campari, Antica Formula, Soda)...

We both ordered Rib Eye on the Bone - James had the Cape Grim Dry Aged 36 Month Old Grass Fed, mine (pictured) was the  Rangers Valley Dry Aged 300 Days Grain Fed. For sides we had onion rings and Potato and Cabbage Gratin. They look like doughnuts and apple pie but the only thing they had in common with their sweet doppelgängers was their unbelievable taste!

Well fed and feeling very warm and fuzzy, we skipped the desserts and rushed out to enjoy a few drinks with pals. Our first ever visit to Rockpool was a magnificent start to the New Year and our dining experiences in Melbourne. Stay tuned for for more of our restaurant and bar hopping escapades...

  1. Well..I'm officially drooling.

  2. Looks really delicious! Josh and I are heading to Melbourne for our 1st (out of 3) honeymoons in a few months time - Rockpool looks like an awesome place to try :)
